How to use PROT

Everything you need to know to start protecting yourself online in five minutes.

The basics
1
🌐 Browse to any Terms of Service page

PROT runs automatically in the background. Just navigate to any Terms of Service, EULA, or Privacy Policy page — on any website. You don't need to do anything manually. PROT detects legal documents by their content and URL, and starts scanning immediately.

Tip: PROT works on most legal document pages. Look for pages with titles like "Terms of Service", "User Agreement", "Privacy Policy", or "End User License Agreement".
2
🔢 Watch the badge appear on the icon

Once PROT finishes scanning, a number badge appears on the extension icon in your browser toolbar. This tells you at a glance how many concerns were found. A red badge means serious issues were detected — amber means moderate concerns.

No badge? Either the page doesn't contain a legal document, or PROT found nothing to flag. That's a good sign.
3
🖱️ Click the PROT icon to open the report

Click the PROT icon in your toolbar to open the popup. You'll see a summary of all concerns found, broken down by severity. Each finding shows the exact clause that triggered it, a plain-English explanation of why it's a concern, and the consumer law it may violate.

4
📍 Click a finding to jump to it on the page

Every finding in the popup is clickable. Tap any result and PROT will scroll your browser directly to that clause in the document and highlight it — so you can read it in full context. The popup will close automatically and the clause will be marked on the page.

Understanding severity levels
5
⚖️ What the severity levels mean

Every finding is rated on a four-level scale based on how aggressively the clause may affect your rights.

☢️ NUCLEAR
Combination clauses that stack multiple unfair terms together — for example, sole discretion to terminate plus no refunds. These may be unconscionable or void under consumer law. Consider legal advice before agreeing.
🚨 HIGH
Clauses that significantly tilt the balance of power — unilateral termination without notice, broad indemnification, absolute liability waivers. Common, but worth reading carefully before you sign up.
⚠️ MEDIUM
Terms that could catch you off-guard — automatic renewals, broad data collection, forced arbitration, or unannounced contract changes. Usually legal, but worth knowing about.
ℹ️ LOW
Standard boilerplate that appears in most contracts. Low individual risk, but still worth skimming — context matters.

⚙️ Customise what PROT flags

Open Settings (the gear icon in the popup) to control which severity levels PROT scans for. If you only want to see the most serious issues, you can turn off LOW and MEDIUM findings to keep the report focused. Your settings sync across devices automatically.

Performance mode: Also available in Settings. Disables the animated starfield to reduce CPU usage on slower machines.

You're all set 🎉

PROT will work quietly in the background. The next time you land on a Terms of Service page, it'll have your back.
